Pot Rack Space Saver
A big storage dilemma in many kitchens is storing those bulky pots and pans. They can take up a lot of room when stored in the cabinets. Well, if your cookware is top of the line - and even if it isn't - display and store it by installing a hanging pot rack in the kitchen.
A pot rack is heavy, so it should be fastened to the solid wood of ceiling joists or beams. When purchasing a rack, make sure it will work in your kitchen. To do the installation, you'll definitely need a helper. If you are not going to really load up your pot rack with cast iron skillets, then you can use toggle bolt type ceiling hooks for your chains to hang from.
The following is instructions for installation of
screw type ceiling hooks.
Locate the ceiling joists with a stud finder. If your ceiling joists are not in the proper place to align your pot rack where you want it then you may want to go into the attic to add some 2 by 4's above where your hooks will be. Mark on your ceiling where the hooks need to go. You can then pre drill your pilot holes through the sheetrock from underneath. If your ceiling joists are in the right place then just screw your ceiling hooks into the ceiling joists. If not then push a piece of wire through at least one of the holes to help you find the holes in the attic. Go into the attic with a tape measure and find your pilot holes. Measure what length your 2 by 4's will need to be. Cut your 2 by 4's to length and then place them in the attic above the pilot holes. You can then nail your 2 by 4's into place by nailing through the existing ceiling joists into the ends of the 2 by 4's. Two nails about 3 to 4 inches long on each end should be sufficient.
If your ceiling joists are in the right place then you can mark where the four ceiling hooks will be located. Make sure it's squared over the island or counter.
Pre-drill pilot holes for the hooks then screw them into the joists. You may need to use a screwdriver for leverage. Hang your chains or hangers from the hooks and then lift the rack (here is where your helper comes in handy) and hook it to the chains.
You have now created more storage space in your kitchen not to mention creating a beautiful focal point to enjoy for years.

You may use ceiling hooks with the toggle bolt option if your ceiling joists are not in the right place. You can usually find these in any hardware store. They are decorator hooks that come in black, brass and white. They are usually rated for 15 to 25 lbs each. You just drill a hole big enough for the toggle to go through and when it gets through the sheetrock it automatically opens. Then you just tighten it. This way you can virtually place your pot rack anywhere you want it. This is not recommended for heavy applications. We have a heavy duty type of toggle hook that will hold 50 pounds or more each available in colors from Leos Artistic Iron Pot Racks.
Another tip.
Your chains can be hung at an angle if this will help in your installation of your pot rack but only angle the chains outwards towards the ceiling. Never inwards. If your pot rack has 4 chains such as the ones I build then this will help eliminate sway.
I hope it has been helpful.
